Survival mode

Tuesday, August 21, 2007

If you're considering starting your own business, make sure you're ready to switch into "survival mode." This is comparable to doing 80 mph on the freeway in 2nd gear... RPMs are very high and your engine is under constant stress. The good news is that you've got more pick up than if you were in 6th gear; ready to go faster in an instant. I'm not really sure where I'm going with this analogy... anyway, be prepared to feel a LOT of pressure. This must be part of the reason why 50% of startups fail within the first five years of business.

Man, this was sort of a depressing entry. Sorry about that - it is what it is though.

My head is killing me... gotta get back to work.

Here's a good article written by Guy Kawasaki: The Art of Execution

Another great post.

I just got done running. I was thinking about this post. Because I was running in what I call think-do stage. I am doing (running) but I'm still able to think.

Actually, I realized that I have three running "gears": 1) Thinking, 2) Thinking-Doing, 3) Doing

In thinking gear, I sitting on my behind thinking about what I should be doing.

In thinking-doing gear, my favorite gear, I'm jogging at a reasonable pace where I can run and think, simultaneously. Of course, there are various speeds I can jog at within this gear: easy walking to almost running. At the upper end of this gear, I can still think but thoughts of when I'm going to get more air start to creep in. I can go on for a looong time in this gear.

In the doing stage, it's all running. My breathing is labored enough that all I can think about is breathing. Make it a few more steps. I usually run my last few minutes in this gear just to show myself I can.

So relating it to business.
Lots of times I'm just sitting there in thinking gear when I should be thinking-doing. But sometimes I am just in doing gear. I can't think of anything else except breathing and getting the work done.

Not only are you wise, but you have reminded me that I need to jog more often!

Thanks Bob.
