How To Make Money

Sunday, December 10, 2006

This title may be a little on the misleading side, sorry. There are days when I feel like I've got a good grasp on this topic, while other days (like today) I wonder how in the world I'm going to make the next payroll, which right now only includes me!

There seem to be plenty of people around that have figured out how to make money (and keep making more money). Some of these people actually lead a pretty sad life though because of their inability to balance their priorities in life, while other are equally successful in their rolls as a father, husband, friend, etc.

The good news is that I am trying (very hard) to figure out how to be a successful entrepreneur while leading a balanced life - and the minute I start to figure things out along the way I'm going to share the "secrets" to this mystery with everyone I can, including you (all five of my blog readers).

Tomorrow is Monday, which is a beautiful thing. It's a beautiful thing to have a Monday where you can start fresh. I am going to wipe my white board clean and start from scratch. Begin a new day and week with a positive outlook that I can and will figure out how to make everything work together. And if I have any insights during the week, I'll share them right here for you.

I'm not sure if your looking for comments or not, but I've discovered an insight over the past couple of weeks that I felt like sharing: My wife and I had our first baby--a baby girl--5 weeks ago today. Because my wife is spending a lot more time inside taking care of our baby, we have tried to make it a point to go for a walk every night. It gives us a chance to get away from any distractions--phones, TV, Internet, etc. and just talk. (It helps that our daughter loves being in her Baby Bjorn and that we have incredible Southern California weather to walk in.) In addition, because I work at a desk all day, it gives me a chance to get some fresh air. I feel that my life has been closer to balanced since we started making a concerted effort to go on our walks together.

You mean someone actually reads this thing?!

Thanks for sharing about your family walks. The Utah winter weather prohibits us from going on an evening stroll, however your point of getting away from distractions is a wise one, especially as a family. Another great part about your family walks is that it costs nothing. I have found it easy to get into the habit of going to a movie or otherwise doing something together that costs money, while at the same time robs us of quality time together. I'm going to work on this one... thanks again for sharing (and reading my blog!).

Thanks for reading? Thanks for doing it! I appreciate your insights and check it out at least every couple of days.

I had an insight earlier today when I was telling my wife about the comment I posted (above) and it occurred to me that one way to accomplish more in life is to accomplish multiple objectives by performing one task. What I mean is...

We all have areas of life we are trying to balance: work, family, physical well-being, spiritual, etc. I think that we can accomplish more and feel better about our accomplishments if we find tasks that lead toward success in multiple areas. The reason I feel more balanced by going on walks with my family is that I get to spend time with my family at the same time I am work towards physical well-being. It seems like an obvious thing, but I never put it together like this until today and I think this insight will help me be more creative in finding more productive tasks.

Thanks, Andrew, for writing such an entry that helped lead to this insight. I look forward to reading more posts. (No pressure!)

Funny you say that. I'm not a creative ninja, just a decent imitator. Really, graphic design isn't my core competence. I just know when something looks good, clean, and professional.

(NOTE: Working from home equals fast comment replies. :))
